Renowned Italian composer Puccini’s immortal work “La Boheme,” which was premiered last December, will be on stage on Feb. 5, with a surprise this time.

Celebrating its 15th year this season, the Antalya State Opera and Ballet (ANTDOB) will offer a full program throughout the month of February. In 28 days, the ballet will perform 14 shows including five operas, two ballets, one musical, three concerts and three children’s plays.

Renowned Italian composer Puccini’s immortal work “La Boheme,” which was premiered last December, will be on stage on Feb. 5, with a surprise this time. One of Turkey’s internationally acclaimed sopranos, Leyla Gencer’s latest students, soprano Simge Büyükedes, who is the winner of the “Best Opera Singer of the Year Award” of Andante Magazine 2014 Donizetti Classical Music Awards, will take the stage with ANTDOB artists.

The orchestra in the performance will be conducted by Artem Makarov.

ANTDOB will take the stage once again for those who want to see the musical “Tangopera,” which previously performed to a full house and was highly appreciated. The musical will be performed on Feb. 11 with music by Serdar Yalçın and libretto by Murat Göksu. The musical was choreographed by Uğur Seyrek.

The premiere of Italian composer Rossini’s “The Turk in Italy” will be performed on Feb. 17 by ANTDOB. The two-act comic work is an example of the Turkish effect in the European art.

Along with the artists of ANTDOB, guest artists from Ankara, Istanbul and İzmir State Opera and Ballets will be on the stage for the work on Feb. 19 and 21.

ANTDOB will crown its February program with the ballet “Murad V,” which was selected as the Best Ballet-Dance Production and the Best Choreography at the 2013 Donizetti Classical Music Awards. The libretto of the show was written by musicologist Murat Arıcı and the choreography was conceived by Armağan Davran and Volkan Ersoy.

Sultan Murad V was the 33rd sultan of the Ottoman Empire and reigned from May 30, 1876, to Aug. 31, 1876, when he was replaced by his brother Abdülhamid II. He became the sultan when his uncle Abdülaziz was deposed, but he reigned for only 93 days before being deposed on the grounds that he had mental problems. The sultan was known to be highly influenced by French culture. The show will be on stage on Feb. 26 and 28.

Children plays, concerts

ANTDOB will stage a children’s play named “Şekeronya” (Candyland) after the break from school ends and classes resume on Feb. 9 and once again on Feb. 23. The menace of Şekeronya, Fırıldak has fled from his homeland only to find himself stuck on a net in the garden of an old house where he meets with two friends.

There will also be concerts in the February program. The first of the concerts will be “A Night in Paris” on Feb. 7. It will be followed by a chamber music concert for foreign guests visiting Antalya.

On Feb. 24, ANTDOB will be on the stage with the Spanish Composers Concert.

All events will be performed at the Haşim İşcan Culture Center.
