Unexplored villages of Turkey’s Aegean provinces await visitors
Turkey’s Aegean provinces and their cozy villages rich in cultural and natural heritages offer a perfect getaway for those who want an isolated holiday during the pandemic.
Kuyucular: Located in Aydın province’s Umurlu district, the Kuyucular village is an old nomad village. Locals earn their livelihood by stockbreeding and weaving. The village has a historic arched bridge at its entrance.
Süngüllü: Known for its hospitable people, the Süngüllü village is quite cozy and surrounded by nature. Located in the Denizli province, the village is also known as the one “to touch the clouds in all seasons.”
Çeşmealtı: Located in the province of İzmir’s Urla district, Çeşmealtı village is known for its serenity and tranquil atmosphere. The Çeşmealtı port, which dates back to 4,000 B.C., is one of the most historic ports located in the district. The village had once been a center for trade because of its olive oil production and its proximity to the ancient city of Klazomenia.
Kapkırı: Located on the coastline of Lake Bafa, the Kapkırı village was one of the important trade centres during ancient times. Rich in natural heritage, the village is home to many ancient artifacts and ruins from the Hellenistic and Byzantine periods.
Doğanbey: the Doğanbey village, located between the peninsulas of Söke and Dilek and dating back to the seventh century B.C, is an old Greek village. Many of its stone houses have been restored and put under protection over the years.
Birgi: Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 2012, the Birgi village has an abundance of historic buildings left by the Ottoman Empire. Located only 10 kilometers away from the district of Ödemiş, the village’s most important structure is the Grand Mosque, which was built by Mehmet Bey from the Aydınoğulları Seigniory.
Kayaköy: Located in the province of Muğla’s Fethiye district, the Kayaköy village is a natural and cultural treasure trove. The whole village is under protection due to its marvelous historical sites. It exhibits the perfect synthesis of different ancient periods that it had once witnessed.
Yeşilyurt: One of the most important centers of silkworm breeding and silk weaving for more than 250 years, the Yeşilyurt village astonishes visitors with its unparalleled nature and enchanting olive trees.
