The road collapse occurred near the construction site for the Dudullu-Bostancı metro line in early hours. A security cabin that belonged to an adjacent housing estate and is used by security personnel buried under the debris.
Units from the fire department, police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Rescue teams later recovered the bodies of the two security personnel.
Three buildings near the collapsed road have also been evacuated as a precaution immediately after the incident.
An eight-meter deep and 10-meter wide hole formed after the collapse.
Gas and electricity supplies to the neighborhood were cut off.
“The collapse happened so fast that those two personnel did not have time to escape from the boot. We have yet to determine the cause of this incident. Only technical inspections will reveal the cause,” Istanbul’s Mayor Mevlüt Uysal told reporters who arrived at the site later in the day.
He added that the tunnel construction for the metro line at this spot was completed one and a half years ago.
“Maybe, a void had formed under the ground and this might cause the incident,” Uysal said, adding that there had not been any such deadly collapses in metro construction sites before.
“We share the grief of families who have lost their loved ones,” he said.
