Turkish firm creates new farm fish species
A Turkish firm based in the Aegean province of İzmir has created a new farm fish species by crossbreeding common dentex (Dentex dentex) and pink dentex (Dentex gibbosus).
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has given the green light for production of the fish branded as “Egeli” at the Turkish firm Akvatur’s fish farms off the Karaburun district in İzmir.
The scientific name of the hybrid species is going to be “Dentex royal,” Akvatur chair Haluk Tuncer told Anadolu Agency.
“Egeli weighs as much as half a kilogram in a year, and it reaches one kilogram in one and a half years,” he said, pointing out that it grows faster than the mainstream farm fish varieties such as the gilt-head bream and sea bass.
“Our targeted selling size is one kilogram, but it can grow as large as six kilograms,” he added.
Egeli poses no threat to the marine ecosystem even when some individuals escape from the farms, he also said.
The firm plans to export the fish to foreign countries.
The number of fish farms has increased in recent years as the pressure on the fish species caused by overfishing soared.
