The most sublime ancient structure of the Black Sea region: Kov Castle
The 658-year-old Kov Castle in the eastern Black Sea province of Gümüşhane leaves visitors astounded with its archaic architecture.
One of the most sublime structures of the Black Sea region, the Kov Castle was built on a 130-meter-high bedrock.
The ancient castle was built by a Byzantine emperor, Alexios III, in 1361, to protect the province from invasion threats that were intensely felt from the east.
Studies have also found that the castle remained as a key structure during the Seljukian period.
The Kov Castle is surrounded by a citadel that includes a cistern and a kitchen.
Archeological discoveries have shed light on stoneware remains dating back to the medieval times.
The magnificent castle was renovated in 2007.
