Rhinos rambled once upon a time in Anatolian wetlands
Turkish scientists have unearthed 140 fossils in Central Anatolia, including a full head of an 8.5 million year-old rhinoceros, which show how wetlands of the region turned arid as time went by. Click through for the story in photos...
Prof. Ayla Sevim Erol from Ankara University, who heads the excavations in the Çankırı province, told state-run Anadolu Agency on Aug. 17 that 500 fossils of three different rhino species were found in the area.
Sevim added that their findings show how the Central Anatolian pan, which is quite arid in modern times, was once a wetland suitable for rhinos.
Some 140 fossils belonging to giraffes, horses, sheep, goats and boar species were also unearthed in the area during the excavation season.
