‘Mysterious’ oil spill hits western Turkish coast

Envrionment and Urban Ministry officials were dispatched to the western province of İzmir’s Foça district on Sept. 1 after locals warned that their shoreline was trashed by oil brought by waves.
Spill affected two neighborhoods of Foça, which is a popular tourist destination.
Provincial department of the ministry announced on Sept. 1 that “2,5 km.-long shoreline was affected from the fuel oil spill” and all necessary measures have been taken to remove pollution.
Civilian teams aided by helicopters, as well as the Coast Guard, have been dispatched to pinpoint the source of the leakage, the statement said.
Nearby ships, as well as local facilities on the shore, will be inspected, it added.
Environment and Urban Minister Murat Kurum announced at noon on Sept. 1 that the spill was "brought under control" after 80 people worked on it.
