Low water level reveals historic ‘Sunken City’
Low water level reveals historic ‘Sunken City’
Visitors can now see Lake Hazar’s “Sunken City” in the Sivrice district of the eastern province of Elazığ thanks to a lower water level.
The submerged city remains replete with the ruins of citadels and castle walls from Seljuk, Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
Artifacts uncovered in archaeological digs in and around the Sunken City date back as far as 4,000 years.
Turkish officials have been striving to register the archeological and natural treasure on the temporary UNESCO World Heritage list.
Boat tours will be organized to allow visitors to discover the once-hidden city in Lake Hazar.
