President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s aircraft on June 21 made the first ever landing at Istanbul’s new airport, which he said would be one of the three biggest airports in the world with an annual capacity of 90 million passengers in the first phase.
After the landing of Erdoğan’s plane, the new airport’s “Follow-Me” cars were also used for the first time. According to media reports, the new airport bought a series of BMW i8s, whose prices start from 1.2 million Turkish Liras.
BMW i3s and Dacia Dusters will also be a part of the fleet of “Follow-Me” cars at the new Istanbul airport. The older fleet, as seen in this photo, featured more modest cars.
“Follow-Me” cars are used in aircraft marshalling, which is visual signalling between ground personnel and pilots at an airport. The marshaller signals to the pilot to keep turning, slow down, stop, and shut down engines, leading the aircraft to its parking stand or to the runway.
Different models are used as Follow-Me cars around the world. Lamborghinis are famously used in Italy's Bologna Airport.
Here are more Follow-Me cars from other world airports...
