Gendarmerie seizes historical Torah in Turkey’s Muş
Gendarmerie seizes historical Torah in Turkey’s Muş
Security forces seized handwritten ancient Torah manuscripts in an anti-smuggling operation in the eastern province of Muş.
Three suspects who tried to sell the Torah for $1.25 million, which is believed to be historical, were detained by gendarmerie teams acting as buyers.
The intelligence work was carried out by the gendarmerie teams against the smugglers of historical artifacts, according to a statement made by the local governor’s office.
An operation was organized for those trying to sell the Torah. Three people were taken into custody as a result of the operation organized by the secret law enforcement officer after contact with the suspects.
In a search at the suspects’ homes and vehicles, 25 coins, rings, electronic detectors and earthen cubes that were said to be historic were seized.
Thousands of anti-smuggling operations are carried out across Turkey every year to halt the illegal sale of historical objects and protect the country’s rich cultural heritage.
The issue is crucial to a country that is home to about 3,000 ancient cities from 42 civilizations and whose tourism industry relies on its rich historical heritage to attract millions of foreign visitors each year.
