Dr. Öz hails 'resilience' of child victims of Syrian war
Turkish-American cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mehmet Öz said in a tweet on Sept. 18 that he was greatly moved by his visits to refugee camps in Turkey and Syria, noting it was something he would never forget. Click through for the story in photos...
"I had the opportunity to visit Syrian refugee camps along the Syria-Turkey border with the help of [Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority] AFAD and [the Turkish Red Crescent] Kızılay. "Despite the hardships the people we met have endured, their stories of resilience are inspiring - this is a trip that has forever changed me," Öz said in a post on his Twitter account.
Öz -- who is widely known by his television program The Dr. Öz Show that has won several Daytime Emmy Awards -- visited Syria’s northwestern Azaz region in July to examine children, who were affected by bombings.
Giving presents to children, Öz also examined the 12-year-old girl Zeynep, who has a heart condition.
During his visit, the cardiac surgeon also examined the 13-year-old boy Musenna Asi, who suffered injuries after his house in Deyr-Ez-Zor was bombed.
“There are thousands of children here,” Dr. Öz said, adding: “Adults are trying to move on with their lives but if we do not help Syria, we will suffer the consequences. These children may become doctors, lawyers in the future or may become people that we do not want them to be. We must help them.”
He also said Turkey is the only solution for the injured children to survive.
Coming to Turkey’s southeastern Gaziantep province under a program by Turkish Prime Ministry’s Disaster Relief Agency, Öz headed to Syria from Öncüpınar Customs’ Gate.
