Authorities start demolishing building in streambed in Turkey’s Rize

The demolishment has been reported to last for three days.
“From now on, with the rehabilitation works of all streams, earth fillings and invasions [of streams by illegal constructions] will be cleared off. Demolishment works in [the northern province of] Ordu will also take place along with the demolishment works in Rize,” a senior official of the Environment and Urban Planning Ministry said.
Vedat Gürgen, the general director of the Infrastructure and Urban Transformation Services of the Environment and Urban Planning Ministry, urged citizens not to undertake any further illegal constructions as they will all be “demolished.”
The building in the Kömürcüler village had come under the spotlight during flash floods that hit the region in August, prompting authorities to authorize its demolishment.
Local media had reported at the time that a three-story building was built in the same spot 15 years ago, but its owners illegally added new floors over the past decade.
As a final attempt to save the building, the owners filed an application for “property amnesty” declared before the June 24 elections, which allowed the legalization of the illegal construction by paying off penalties. But the Environment and Urban Planning Ministry rejected the owners’ application, deciding to demolish the building and seize its land by paying its full value.
