30 years have passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the symbol of the Cold War. The wall, which began construction on August 13, 1961 and isolated West Berlin in East Germany, pulled down on Nov. 9, 1989.

After the East German administration decided to close the border in Berlin on Aug. 12, 1961 in order to prevent these escapes, the soldiers turned the area of the Soviet administration with barbed wires.

When these barbed wires could not prevent the escape, on the night of Aug. 17, 1961, the 3.6-meter-high Berlin Wall, which would later be known as the Wall of Shame, was built with bricks. Thus, Berlin, which was divided into two in 1949, was physically divided by a wall.

The Berlin Wall also divided Germany, Europe and the world into two blocks and became the symbol of the Cold War.
