For the past seven years, the 44-year old artist Hamdi Çınar, living in Turkey’s northwestern Sakarya province, has been cruising streets and industrial districts to collect materials to be used in art pieces.
“It is important for me to utilize waste. The most crucial thing is not ‘zero waste’ but not consuming excessively. We are surrounded by waste. My main concern is ‘emotional waste...’ Objects that memories are piled upon...and it could be any object,” Çınar explains his philosophy.
Garbage catches his eye all time, he said.
“I observe what people throw away. I pick them if I can lift and carry them.”
He noted that his works after a certain point become some kind of recycling.
Çınar occasionally stops by antique shops to collect materials.
“Such a labor could be exhausting....it could be pleasurable,” Çınar said.
“There is a whole another world there. I have this urge to turn anything into a piece of artwork. Think about it for a moment: You are at an antiques shop or a scrap dealer’s place. So many materials there you could use. This may drive you mad,” he said.
People now are aware of what he is doing, providing him with materials he may use, Çınar added.
“Those people have always something for me.”
“People offer flowers or chocolate as gift, but I receive bizarre things as gift such as stone and objects.”
