Israel, Iran unleash fresh attacks as Mideast on alert

A plume of smoke rises from the port of Jebel Ali following a reported Iranian strike in Dubai on March 1, 2026.

Israel on March 1 said that it has carried out a new wave of strike “in the heart of Tehran,” as Iran unleashed fresh retaliatory strikes on several U.S. bases in the Middle East.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared Khamenei's killing a "declaration of war against Muslims.”

"Iran considers it its legitimate duty and right to avenge the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime,” he warned.

Iran's army announced strikes targeting U.S. bases in the Gulf and Iraqi Kurdistan after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to unleash "force that has never been seen before" and urged Iran's people to rise up and seize power.

Iran's first retaliatory strikes on Feb. 28 had hit all the Gulf states apart from Oman, which had sought to mediate U.S.-Iran talks.

But on March 1, the country's commercial port of Duqm was hit by two drones, injuring a foreign worker, with a tanker off the sultanate's coast also hit.

Outrage at the Feb. 28 wave of U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran, which killed 86-year-old Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and some other senior figures, spilled over into neighboring Iraq and Pakistan, where crowds attempted to storm U.S. diplomatic missions.

In the Pakistani megacity of Karachi, at least eight people were killed during pro-Iran protests at the U.S. consulate.

In Iran, the Red Crescent said strikes had left 201 people dead and injured hundreds more.

Iran responded to the strikes with a flurry of missile and drone strikes across the Middle East, killing at least two people in Abu Dhabi and another in Tel Aviv, before following up with a new wave after state media confirmed Khamenei's death.

Britain's defense secretary said on March 1 "Iranian indiscriminate retaliatory attacks" included "two ballistic missiles fired in the direction of Greek Cyprus" but it was not believed they were "targeted" at the Mediterranean island.

Israel mobilizes about 20,000 reservists

Meanwhile, Israeli military’s Home Front Command said it had mobilized around 20,000 reservists to assist civilians following Iranian missile attacks.

The development came as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched strikes that “belongs the Iranian terror regime in the heart of Tehran,” the military said.

“Over the past day, the Israeli Air Force conducted large-scale strikes in order to establish aerial superiority and to pave the path to Tehran.”
