Türkiye’s NATO role expands beyond frontline defense: Analysis

ANKARA

Türkiye’s role in NATO has expanded beyond that of a frontline country guarding the alliance’s borders to encompass planning, production and command responsibilities, according to an analysis published by the Presidential Communications Directorate.

The assessment, titled “NATO Ankara Summit: Reinforcing the Transatlantic Alliance,” appeared in the latest issue of the directorate’s monthly Ayın Tarihi (History of the Month) magazine.

It said the July 7-8 summit reaffirmed NATO’s transatlantic bond and commitment to collective defense as U.S. support for the alliance faced questions, helping shore up its political unity.

“Ankara brought the U.S. president and European leaders to the same table, creating a political platform that showed the transatlantic bond remained intact,” the analysis said.

Türkiye’s value to NATO cannot be reduced to its geographical position, it added, citing the country’s military capacity, operational experience, defense industry and diplomatic contacts with parties to different crises.

These capabilities have broadened Türkiye’s role within NATO and made it an actor helping shape security on the alliance’s southern flank, the analysis said.
