Russian barrage on Ukraine kills 15, wounds dozens more

Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least 15 people and wounded 51 in Kiev and the surrounding region overnight, Ukrainian authorities said on Aug. 5.

One woman was killed and 24 people were wounded in the capital, where the attacks damaged residential buildings and warehouses and sparked fires in four districts, the Kiev military administration said.

In the wider Kiev region, 14 people were killed and 27 wounded, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Rescue operations continued at several sites.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev regional administration, described the barrage as one of the region’s most deadly recent attacks.

The strikes followed Ukrainian air force warnings of incoming ballistic missiles. They came four days after another Russian attack on Kiev killed nine people and wounded more than 30.

Ukraine has repeatedly urged its allies to supply more U.S.-made Patriot interceptors as Russia increases its use of ballistic missiles more than four years into its full-scale invasion.

Both sides have stepped up long-range attacks in recent weeks. Russian authorities said Ukrainian drone strikes in the Moscow region on Aug. 4 killed five people and wounded 10, while officials reported further drone interceptions around Moscow and in the Tula region.

The United Nations said at least 293 civilians were killed and 1,990 wounded across Ukraine in June, the highest monthly casualty total since April 2022.
