ISTANBUL

Renewable energy led the expansion of Türkiye’s electricity generation capacity, accounting for 88.1 percent of net capacity additions between June 2025 and June 2026.

According to the Energy Market Regulatory Authority’s (EPDK) Electricity Market Sector Reports, Türkiye’s total installed electricity capacity, including licensed and unlicensed facilities, increased from 119,740 megawatts at the end of the first half of 2025 to 126,113 megawatts at the end of the first half of 2026.

Of the total increase, 5,613 megawatts came from renewable energy sources.

Renewable installed capacity rose from 73,195 megawatts to 78,808 megawatts during the period, while the share of renewables in total installed capacity increased from 61.1 percent to 62.5 percent.

Solar and wind power drove the growth in renewable capacity.

When licensed and unlicensed facilities are considered together, solar power capacity increased from 23,573 megawatts to 27,210 megawatts over the past year, recording a net increase of approximately 3,637 megawatts.

Wind power capacity rose from 13,476 megawatts to 15,281 megawatts during the same period, an increase of about 1,805 megawatts.

The combined increase of 5,442 megawatts in solar and wind capacity accounted for approximately 97 percent of the growth in renewable installed capacity over the past year.

The increase in these two energy sources also represented 85.4 percent of the net growth in Türkiye’s total installed electricity capacity.

The expansion in solar capacity made it the country’s second-largest source of installed generation capacity after hydropower. As of the end of June, hydropower capacity stood at 32.3 gigawatts, followed by solar at 27.2 gigawatts and wind at 15.3 gigawatts.

Biomass installed capacity reached around 2.2 gigawatts, while geothermal capacity stood at 1.8 gigawatts.

The combined installed capacity of hydropower, solar and wind energy reached 74.8 gigawatts, accounting for approximately 59 percent of Türkiye’s total electricity generation capacity.

Electricity generation from licensed and unlicensed facilities in Türkiye increased from 171.3 terawatt-hours in the first half of 2025 to approximately 174.8 terawatt-hours in the same period of 2026.

Power generation from renewable sources posted significantly stronger growth during the period.

Electricity generation from hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal sources rose from 81.3 terawatt-hours in the first half of 2025 to 107.5 terawatt-hours in the same period of 2026.

As a result, electricity generation from renewable sources increased by 32.3 percent year-on-year, while the share of renewables in total electricity generation climbed from 47.4 percent to 61.5 percent.
