Plucking water lilies next to Turkey's iconic Abant Lake could be punished by a six-month prison sentence, local authorities are now warning visitors to the northwestern province of Bolu.

Abant's blooming water lilies contribute to the ecosystem through their elaborate networks of roots, so plucking the flower hurts the natural habitat, Bolu authorities said.

In addition to possible jail time, the picker may face a 3,000-Turkish Lira fine.
