Ekrem Demirtaş, the chairman of the board of the İzmir Chamber of Commerce, has announced a plan to launch an annual economic forum in the Aegean city.

“All world leaders gather in Davos every year, as you know. But they hold this important summit in a snowy climate. What if we offer the summer version of it in İzmir’s Çeşme?” he asked yesterday during his speech on the second day of the Eurasian Economic Summit. “We are organizing a new world economic forum to be held in the Çeşme district of İzmir this year.”

Demirtaş said the “Çeşme Economic Summit” will be an alternative to Davos, and that he was scheduled to meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gül to ask for his support for the plan. When asked what opinion participants at the Eurasian Economic Summit seem to have of İzmir’s ambitious goal, he said “They have expressed their full support.”

Demirtaş also said the chamber will grant 38 full scholarships every year to students from 38 countries who want to continue their higher education in Izmir.
