The first litters of 2026 have been born at the Van Cat Villa, part of the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Van Cat Research Center, marking the start of this year’s breeding season for the iconic Turkish breed.

According to officials, eight mother cats have so far given birth to a total of 20 healthy kittens.

The center, established to preserve and increase the population of the world-renowned Van cats, continues its controlled breeding program within the Cat Villa facility.

Known for their friendly temperament, silky white coats, distinctive heterochromatic eyes and unusual affinity for water, Van cats are officially recognized as Türkiye’s national breed.

Veterinary teams at the facility reported that the newborn kittens are in good health and are being closely monitored. The breeding program, conducted under strict supervision, is scheduled in three phases throughout the year, with the first wave of births now underway.

Speaking to reporters, Animal Supervisor Mehmet Atar Bayır said the center has entered another active and “exciting” period.

“As in previous years, we have begun receiving the first batch of births for 2026. So far, around eight mother cats have delivered 20 kittens,” he noted, adding that the process will continue gradually in the coming weeks.

The Van Cat Villa, which attracts thousands of domestic and international visitors annually, aims to ensure sustainable growth of the breed while maintaining high health standards for the animals.
