Türkiye's security council meets amid US-Iran deal

ANKARA

The National Security Council (MGK) has convened on June 18 under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with regional security developments and the U.S.-Iran agreement topping the agenda.

The council, meeting for the third time this year at the presidential complex in the capital Ankara, is expected to assess the implementation of the recent understanding between Washington and Tehran and its implications for regional stability.

Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly concerning Cyprus, are also being discussed, alongside measures to safeguard the rights and interests of Türkiye and Turkish Cypriots.

Domestic security issues are another key focus, including efforts to dismantle terrorist groups as part of the government’s “terror-free Türkiye” initiative and the latest developments in neighboring Syria and Iraq.

The meeting is also expected to address Israel’s military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and preparations for the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8.
