UN peacekeepers 'must address Turkish Cypriot forces'

ANKARA

The National Security Council (MGK) has called for the United Nations Peace Force to establish a formal legal agreement with Turkish Cypriot authorities, according to a statement released after their recent meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The statement, issued by the Communications Directorate, expressed concerns over the UN peacekeepers' "double-standard attitude" and activities that "don't respect the sovereignty of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the fundamental humanitarian needs of Turkish Cypriots."

"Türkiye will continue to be the guarantor of security and peace for the Turkish Cypriots in accordance with its rights derived from international law and treaties," read the statement.

The move comes in the context of the island's long-standing dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, despite numerous diplomatic efforts for a comprehensive settlement.

The statement followed a recent altercation between Turkish Cypriot forces and U.N. peacekeepers last month. The confrontation occurred when the latter obstructed road construction efforts in the village of Pyla, located within the U.N.-patrolled buffer zone.

The road would provide direct access to Pyla for Turkish Cypriots, bypassing a checkpoint at the northern border of a British military base.

Turkish Cypriot authorities argue that the road project has a "humanitarian objective" to facilitate easier access for Pyla village residents. However, the Greek side views the construction as a potentially military-driven move in a sensitive buffer zone.

During the meeting on Sept. 28, participants discussed various regional issues, including the recent ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They stressed that permanent peace in the South Caucasus "can only be achieved through the unconditional establishment of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty."

Turkey will continue to support efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region," the office said.

The meeting additionally addressed developments related to the war in Ukraine, including the revival of the recently suspended grain deal. Türkiye reiterated its determination to continue efforts "for a just and lasting peace in the region."

Furthermore, the meeting evaluated anti-terrorism efforts, highlighting recent operations against organizations such as the PKK, FETÖ and ISIL. The statement also urged actors supporting the PKK to fulfill their "obligations arising from international law and human rights, and their responsibilities as allies."
