Turkey says its air force jets have bombed hideouts used by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) deep inside northern Iraq.

The military said on its website today that warplanes bombed nine shelters and caves - mostly in the Mt. Qandil area, where the main PKK base is located on the Iraqi-Iranian border. It said the raids began Friday.

The raids are the second Turkish air campaign against PKK hideouts in Iraq within a week following the killing of eight Turkish soldiers along its border with Iraq on Tuesday.

The military said more than 30 militants have been killed following Tuesday’s attack.

The PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union,  have used northern Iraq as a springboard for attacks on Turkish targets.
