Turkish prosecutor to investigate the leaking of documents

ISTANBUL- Hürriyet Daily News

Dozens of people who were detained in Istanbul on Monday were sent to court.

The Istanbul specially authorized Deputy Chief Prosecutor’s Office yesterday launched an investigation into the leaking of certain documents from the ongoing Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) probe. The details of the investigation were not clarified as the Daily News went to print yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Istanbul Police Department has ordered the removal of nine officers from their posts in the anti-terror and intelligence departments in charge of monitoring the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on Feb. 15 and reassigned them to other cities.

“[These are] routine appointments conducted out of professional necessities. Assignments were made to vacant positions,” Istanbul Police Chief Hüseyin Çapkın said while on his way out of the Beşiktaş Police Department at around 2 p.m. on Feb. 16.

The police department issued the orders for the shuffling of nine chief police officers and chief inspectors, including Kazım Aksoy, the deputy director of the anti-terror department. Çapkın then ratified the decision.
The move comes shortly after the removal of Yurt Atayün, the director of the Istanbul Anti-Terror Department, and Erol Demirhan, the head of police intelligence in Istanbul, from their posts and their subsequent reassignment in Ankara.

Meanwhile, 46 people who were detained in Istanbul on Monday were sent to court yesterday. The KCK is the alleged urban wing of the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist group by the United States, the EU and Turkey.
