Doomsday scenarios that continue to make the rounds are “superstitious” and "fake,” according to the head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, Mehmet Görmez.

The top cleric released a statement on Dec. 7, calling on people “not to pay attention to such superstitious and fake apocalyptic scenarios.”

The scenarios stem from rumors that the Mayan calendar foretells that the present cycle of existence will cease to exist in a cataclysmic event on Dec. 21, 2012, that will bring the return of Bolon Yokte, a Mayan god associated with war and creation.
