ANKARA

Turkey’s population is expected to exceed 100 million by 2040, if current demographic trends continue, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced.

The population should reach 86.9 million people in 2023 and 100.3 million people in 2040, the country’s statistical authority said on Feb. 21, basing the projections on the results of the state’s address-based population registration system of 2017.

At the end of 2017, the country’s population stood at 80.8 million, with an annual growth rate of 1.24 percent, TÜİK had announced on Feb. 1.

The population will continue to increase until the year 2069, and will reach its highest point with 107.7 million people in that year, according to projections. The population is forecasted to decline after this year and is expected to drop to 107.1 million in 2080.

While the population of 68 provinces is set to increase, the population of 13 provinces will decrease in 2023 compared to 2017, TÜİK has said. The order of the most populous five provinces will not change.

The most populated province is set to be Istanbul again, with 16.3 million in 2023. After Istanbul comes the capital Ankara with 6.1 million, the Aegean province of İzmir with 4.6 million, the Marmara province of Bursa with 3.2 million and the Mediterranean province of Antalya with 2.7 million in 2023, respectively.

In Turkey, life expectancy at birth is increasing and the population continues ageing. Median age of population, which is an important indicator of age structure, is expected to be 32 in 2018, 33.5 in 2023, 38.5 in 2040, 42.3 in 2060 and 45 in 2080.

The proportion of “elderly population,” which covers people of 65 years of age and above, is expected to be 8.7 percent in 2018, 10.2 percent in 2023, 16.3 percent in 2040, 22.6 percent in 2060 and 25.6 percent in 2080.
