Turkey’s death rate and infant mortality rise in 2014

Turkey’s crude death rate rose in 2014, reaching 2011 levels due to the high increase in deaths over the same period, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on April 29.

The number of deaths in Turkey rose by 4.7 percent to over 390,000 in 2014, 54.7 percent of which were males and 45.3 percent females, while the infant mortality rate rose to 11.1 deaths per thousand births.

The crude death rate, or the number of deaths per thousand, rose to 5.1 per thousand in 2014 from 4.9 per thousand in 2013. 

Turkey’s crude death rate stood at 5 per thousand in 2012 and 5.1 per thousand in 2011.

Infant mortality, or the number of infant deaths per one thousand live births, rose to 11.1 per thousand in
2014 from 10.8 per thousand in the previous year, out of a total 14,821 infants born in 2014.

The proportion of infants dying before their first month was 64.7 percent according to the revised 2013 data; this proportion increased to 66.6 percent in 2014.

On the other hand, in 2014, 14.8 percent of infants died within their first day, 31.5 percent of infants died within one to six days and 20.3 percent died within seven to 29 days. The death proportion of infants aged one to four months stood at 21.8 percent.

An under-five mortality rate measures the probability of dying in the five years after birth. While the under-five mortality rate was 13.4 per thousand in 2013, this rate was 13.3 per thousand in 2014.
