Turkey’s President Abdullah Gül and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met in an Istanbul port yesterday for a special meeting to oversee plans for a port along the Turkmenistan shore in the Caspian Sea.

Berdimuhamedov and Gül were given information about the Ambarlı Port located on Istanbul’s Beylikdüzü shore in a meeting closed to the press. Upon the request of Berdimuhamedov the two officials reviewed a model port and Berdimuhamedov, who is preparing to build a new port, demanded to see details of the port onsite, the Hürriyet Daily News has learned.

Turkey’s Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan also attended the meeting where Hakan Genç, president of Turkey’s prominent shipping Arkas Holding Port Services Group, lead a presentation for the trio.

High security measures were taken around the port during the meeting. Gül welcomed Berdimuhamedov at the airport and accompanied him to the port by car.

Gül and Berdimuhamedov then left the port by boat. President Gül was expected to host a dinner in honor of his Turkmen counterpart yesterday evening.

Berdimuhamedow visited Istanbul in March in an effort to strengthen economic ties between Turkey and his country.

On May 15 Berdimuhamedow also received Hakan Fidan, undersecretary of the Turkish National Intelligence Agency (MİT), in Ashkhabad.
