Turkey claims three weightlifting medals

Turkey increased its medal tally to five after Aylin Daşdelen and Bünyamin Sezer won medals in the World Weightlifting Championships in Paris on Nov. 6.

Competing in the 53 kg women’s category, Daşdelen lifted 126 kg in the clean and jerk and 219 kg in total to take silver behind Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan.

Chinshanlo lifted 130 kg in the clean and jerk to set a new world record, beating the previous mark of 129 kg set by China’s Li Ping in 2007.

Daşdelen took silver for the second year in a row. Ji Jing of China won the bronze with a combined weight of 214 kg.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 62 kg, Sezer won a bronze medal in the snatch category, lifting 141 kg. China’s Zhang Jie won the clean and jerk and total category gold medals, while North Korean Kim Un-guk won the silver in total category.

China has won two gold, four silver and two bronze medals to lead the standings, leading Kazakhstan with three gold medals and North Korea with one gold, one silver and one bronze. Turkey is fourth with two silver and three bronze medals.

On the opening day of the tournament, Nurdan Karagöz won two bronze medals to open Turkey’s medal account.
