Turkey awaits $170-mln US torpedoes

WASHINGTON

The U.S. Department of State has approved sale of torpedoes and other equipment to Turkey for an estimated cost of $170 million.

According to a statement released on the U.S. Defense Cooperation Security Agency’s website, the sale of 48 advanced technology all-up-round (AUR) warshot torpedoes and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support to Turkey will be provided by the U.S. government after the Congress’ approval.

“It is vital to U.S. national interests to assist our NATO ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability that will contribute to an acceptable military balance in the area. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives,” the statement on the website read.

The proposed sale will improve Turkey’s capability for self defense, modernization, regional security, and interoperability with U.S. and other NATO members, it said.
