GİRESUN - Anadolu Agency

One soldier was killed in an attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Black Sea province of Giresun, security sources said on July 9.

The soldier was severely wounded during a clash with PKK militants and he later succumbed to his wounds, said a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry announced on July 9 that a total of 40 militants were “neutralized” during counterterrorism operations across the country in the past week.

Turkish authorities often use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply the militants in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

Security forces carried out 985 counterterrorism raids across the country from July 2-9, the Interior Ministry added.
