Security officials of Hüseyin Avni Coş, the governor of the northwestern province of Sakarya, fired shots at a truck on a highway in the province after a fight erupted between them late on May 8.

The quarrel reportedly erupted between security officials and the truck driver Mustafa Köksal over right of way on the TEM highway in the Kartepe-Tepetarla region of Sakarya. After the disagreement escalated, security officials fired two shots at the truck, puncturing one of its tires and damaging the vehicle’s body.

After Köksal parked the truck on a sideway, police teams arrived at the scene and took Köksal to a nearby police station for questioning.

Coş had hit headlines back in November 2013 when he was serving as the governor of the southern province of Adana, after being caught on camera calling a protester “gavat” (pimp in Turkish).

He had received a storm of criticism at the time from both ruling and opposition parties, after engaging in a row with a group protesting his support for the prime minister’s remarks on university students’ co-ed housing.

Defending himself, Coş admitted uttering the remarks but described the protests as a “provocation.”
