Reporting mechanism to target mining accidents

Türkiye’s mining sector is launching a new initiative aimed at preventing workplace accidents through mandatory reporting and data sharing, according to local media.

The report was carried by NTV, which stated the Turkish Miners Association has launched a “Responsible Mining Initiative” requiring member companies to submit detailed accident files.

Under the new framework, mining firms will be obliged to notify the association of incidents occurring at their sites and provide comprehensive root cause analyses.

Safety performance indicators and accident statistics will be compiled in a centralized pool to help identify systemic risks and strengthen preventative measures across the industry. Aggregated data will be made public every six months.

Sixteen companies have so far joined the platform, representing 13 percent of total employment in Türkiye’s mining sector.

Association President Mehmet Yılmaz said mining accounts for 4 percent of all workplace accidents nationwide, emphasizing that “every accident is preventable.”

He stated that sharing root cause analyses would allow other operators to recognize similar hazards and take corrective action before further incidents occur.
