Renowned Turkish professor laid to rest

Prominent Turkish academic and scribe Toktamış Ateş, who died on Jan. 19 of organ failure, was buried today in Istanbul after a ceremony at Istanbul University, where he had lectured. 

Politicians, officials, colleagues and friends paid their last respects to the professor at a separate ceremony at Fatih Mosque in Istanbul. 

“He was my husband and father of my daughter, as well as lecturer Toktamış to a vast majority in Turkey,” Nevin Ateş, the professor’s wife, told journalists at the ceremony. 

Ateş, born in 1944, graduated from the Economics Faculty of Istanbul University in 1967 and became a professor in 1982. Author of more than 30 books, he was also a columnist for daily Cumhuriyet for over 10 years. Recently, he had been writing for daily Bugün.
