President Abdullah Gül has said the debate over the Turkish government’s recent move to shut down prep schools should not cause resentment.

“The important thing is not to have these discussions in a way that may cause distress and resentment,” the president told reporters in the Black Sea province Ordu Nov. 22.

Stressing this is a law making process, Gül said he believes the government will do the right thing.

“Everybody should express their opinion. Everybody can put forward truth from their perspective. The law will constitute as part of the parliamentary process. The lawmakers and our government will consider all of these for sure,” he said.

Since the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government’s plans of transforming prep schools into private schools have come to surface, a war of words has been ongoing between the government and Gülen supporters, who are known to have a great presence in the sector. The move is widely considered to be an intervention in the Gülen “Hizmet” (Service) movement’s educational establishments.
