The photography project will show every street and corner of Istanbul’s Kadıköy.

The photography project will show every street and corner of Istanbul’s Kadıköy.

The Kadıköy Photograph Center and the Fotoamele photography group have announced plans to create a street-by-street, photographic archive of Kadıköy, one of Istanbul’s most important Anatolian-side districts.

The project will show every street and corner of Kadıköy.

The archive will contain the district’s streets, mosques, houses of worship, schools and ancient buildings, said project coordinator Ayşe Küçükkurt.

Organizers said they planned to open an exhibition of all the photographs once the project is completed in the next year. “We will also publish a book with the photographs,” said Küçükkurt.

After completing the Kadıköy archive, Küçükkurt said they would continue by archiving other districts of Istanbul.

Everyone who has a basic knowledge of photography can take part in the project, she added.
The Kadıköy Photograph Center will also organize photography courses to teach basic photography. “People who would like to be a part of this project can take their digital cameras and attend courses at the center,” added Küçükkurt.

Applications will continue until the end of February, Küçükkurt said, adding that the classes were free.

Photos wil be chosen

“Everyone will take photographs in Kadıköy within the regions that will be determined beforehand,” she said. “We will [subsequently] evaluate the works that have done in the regions and choose from among them,” she added.

“We have seen that gardens and houses from the 1940s and 1960s were demolished, and we have witnessed random buildings being constructed in place of these beautiful buildings. We will archive everything in Kadıköy and remember the past,” she said.
