Opposition MHP advisor killed in gun attack on party office in Istanbul

An advisor from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) was killed and seven others were wounded in an attack on one of the party´s campaign offices in Istanbul.

The attack happened late Jan. 26 in Esenyurt district, shortly after the office´s inauguration ahead of local polls due in March. An unknown group of people reportedly opened fire after throwing stones at the party members.

Cengiz Akyıldız, an adviser from the party’s Istanbul headquarters, died after being shot in the heart.

The police have arrested four suspects in connection with the attack, daily Hürriyet has reported.

Istanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu wrote on Twitter that those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice.

MHP Istanbul Deputy Celal Adan said the attack was an attack on the Turkish nation.

MHP Deputy head and Gaziantep lawmaker Semih Yalçın also released a statement regarding the incident, saying the attack was a message of dangerous developments in the future.
