One soldier has been killed and one police officer has been wounded in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari province.

PKK militants launched an attack with long-barreled weapons on a military convoy traveling within Hakkari from Yüksekova to the Şemdinli district on Nov. 10. A sergeant was killed in the attack while a police officer escorting the convoy was wounded.

According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, the convoy was attacked in the Cumhuriyet neighborhood and clashes ensued afterwards between militants and the district security forces that were dispatched to the area.

Security forces launched a wide-scale operation to apprehend the militants while the wounded officer was brought to Yüksekova State Hospital for treatment.

The PKK previously declared a ceasefire on Oct. 10, ahead of the snap elections on Nov.1. However, clashes continued before and after the elections, and were followed by a Nov. 5 declaration announcing the militant organization would resume attacks.
