One person was killed and another was injured on Aug. 30 in a car crash on Istanbul’s new third bridge over the Bosphorus Strait, which was officially opened to traffic on Aug. 26, marking the first deadly accident on the bridge, Doğan News Agency has reported.

At least two rigs crashed due to the alleged negligence of drivers who stopped or slowed their vehicles on the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge to take selfies.

According to initial reports, one person was killed and another was injured in the accident.

The traffic flow on the bridge in both directions also came to halt after the accident.

Meanwhile, initial footage from the scene showed drivers passing on the bridge were the first to help the injured person, as there were no police units or officials nearby.

Recently, drivers also reported a number of traffic breaches by buses and trucks on the connecting roads linking to the bridge.

Thousands of people had flocked to the bridge over the weekend to take selfies.

The third bridge over the Bosphorus has eight road lanes, two rail tracks and is the longest suspension bridge with a railway system in the world.
