One dead, 102 rescued from stricken ferry off Indonesia

One person was killed and more than 100 were rescued on Sept. 13 after a ferry sailing between the Indonesian islands of Java and Borneo was hit by bad weather, rescue officials said.

Search and rescue units carried out efforts to the fullest extent, local chief I Putu Sudayana said.

Teams at the scene successfully evacuated the passengers, he added.

The total number of evacuated individuals reached 103 people, Sudayana noted.

However, one of the rescued passengers died, the official told reporters in the port city of Banjarmasin.

The ferry was originally headed to Banjarmasin before encountering the severe maritime conditions.
