Officials fine company for polluting creek in Turkey’s Aydın

AYDIN

Officials from the provincial environment and urbanization directorate in the western province of Aydın have imposed a fine of 24,000 Turkish Liras ($3,900) on a company for failing to fulfill its environmental commitments and polluting the Aydın Creek in the Germencik district.

The waters of the creek turned red last week, causing concern among locals over pollution. Units from the local gendarmerie forces arrived at the scene for inspection, realizing the color of the creek had changed after a certain location.

After collecting samples from the water to run tests, the officials found that a nearby power plant was not releasing water through channels into the creek.

The officials inspected the pool where the power plant collected its wastewater and spotted the same red color by the pool.

The directorate officials fined the geothermal power plant for failing to fulfill its environmental commitments.
