Number of opera, ballet halls falls

In the 2014-2015 season, as compared to the 2013-2014 season, the number of the opera and ballet halls in Turkey decreased by 26.7 percent, dropping to 11 total, while the number of seats in opera and ballet halls decreased by 37.8 percent to 6,398, according to the Operas, Ballets, Orchestras, Choirs and Groups 2015 statistics revealed by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜIK). 

Six orchestras, 13 choirs and nine bands were performing in affiliation with the Fine Arts General Directorate in 2015. 

In 2014-2015 season, the number of shows performed in opera and ballet halls was 190, an increase of 1.1 percent  compared to 2013-2014 season. 

The number of national shows performed in opera and ballet halls was 75, a decrease of 23.5 percent, while the number of foreign shows performed was 115, an increase of 27.8 percent compared to last season. 

In the 2014-2015 season, 410 performing staff performed in the orchestras affiliated to the General Directorate of Fine Arts and 41 percent of this staff was women. The majority of the violinists, viola artists, flutists and harpists were women, while all of the conductors, orchestra assistant conductors, notists and tuba, luthiye and timpani performers were male.

In the 2014-2015 season, the number of performances of orchestras was 218, an increase of 2.8 percent compared to the previous season, according to the report.
