A New York City police officer was warmly lauded by social media users after a tourist photographed him while he was giving a pair of boots to a homeless man without shoes near Times Square on Nov.14, Yahoo News has reported.

The officer reportedly saw the homeless man and after disappearing for a while returned with boots he had bought form a nearby shop.

A tourist in the city, Jennifer Foster, snapped the photo and later sent it to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The photo received more than 483,000 likes on Facebook after the NYPD shared it on its official page.

“The officer said, ‘I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let’s put them on and take care of you,’” Foster reportedly said. “The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on the man.”

“I have been in law enforcement for 17 years,” Forester continued. “I was never so impressed in my life.
It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost.”
