A new container city will be installed in the southern province of Adana for refugees who have fled from war-torn Syria, where civil has been continuing since 2011, Adana Governor Mahmut Demirtaş announced on Feb. 8, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

The container city, which will be located in Adana’s Sarıçam district, will host at least 25,000 refugees in 5,000 containers.

Demirtaş visited the area where the construction process is ongoing, according to the written statement from the Governor’s Office, adding that he was informed about the work by Sarıçam District Governor Ali Murat Kayhan and officials from contractor companies.

He said the city would be opened soon and stressed the importance of meeting the needs of refugees in the province.

“The educational, sheltering and health needs of refugees living in harsh conditions in tents located in districts and the center of Adana will be satisfied significantly,” Demirtaş added.

“The container city, which will include social amenities, will serve Syrian refugees who have fled from civil war.  Protecting them is a human duty for us. After completion of the new container city, thousands of Syrians will be able to avoid living in harsh conditions,” he said.
