A mother of two was released along with her children after spending eight hours in prison on May 12, following the approval of her 10 month jail sentence two days before.

Nazan Dikici Opan was tried by the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court on charges of “making propaganda for a terror organization” after attending demonstrations against the prison conditions of outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan.

She was sentenced to 10 months in prison by the court, and the 9th Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Appeals approved the sentence on May 10.

Opan was taken to jail on May 12 along with her two sons, as the children did not want to separate from their mother. After her lawyer appealed the decision, the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court decided for a stay of execution and sent the file to the Justice Ministry demanding the cancellation of the sentence.

Opan was released from prison after spending only eight hours in prison with her two sons. Her husband, Metin Opan, said he did not want to leave the children in prison because they were sick but had to do so when they refused to leave their mother. He said he told them that their mother was staying “in a school.”
