Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli was discharged from hospital on Jan. 20, as his doctor said he had undergone a scheduled, preventative open-heart surgery procedure.

Supporters of Bahçeli were in front of the hospital on Jan. 20 when he left the hospital on foot.

Prof. Dr. Sertaç Çiçek told reporters on Jan. 20 that Bahçeli had undergone the four-hour-long operation on Jan. 15 at a private hospital in the Gebze district of northwestern Kocaeli province.

“His health situation is very good now,” he said.

Recalling that the MHP leader also had heart surgery in 2004, Çiçek said they fixed a problem in one of the heart valves which could have caused problems in the future. “This was a planned surgery to prevent such problems in the future,” said Bahçeli’s doctor. After leaving the hospital in Gebze, Bahçeli went to Ankara in car and will now be given time to recuperate and rest at home.
