Police in Istanbul have prevented a man from committing suicide at the Bosphorus Bridge in the morning hours of July 11 after two long hours of painstaking efforts to persuade him not to jump off of the bridge.

According to reports, the individual climbed on the bridge railings at 7:30 a.m., prompting police to intervene. The cause of the individual’s suicide attempt has not been disclosed.

The Bosphorus Bridge is 64-meters above the Bosphorus Straight and most of the suicide attempts are fatal due to the strong currents.

The incident occurred in the morning rush hour and caused a huge traffic jam on one of Istanbul’s main arteries linking the two parts of the city on each continent.
