Asım Kocabıyık, a prominent Turkish industrialist and a leading supporter of the arts, died yesterday in Istanbul. He was 88.

Kocabıyık was the founder and honorary president of Turkey’s Borusan Holding, which owns companies in the steel, energy, information technology and logistics businesses. He was also the distributor of BMW, Rolls Royce and Land Rover cars in Turkey.

The industrialist started his business career as a steel and iron importer and an agricultural products exporter, before launching a steel production business in 1955 and Borusan in 1958. Today, Borusan is an international steel pipes producer.
