Galata tower, one of Istanbul’s most iconic structures, was lit pink on Oct. 30 as part of the events marking breast cancer awareness month. The MEMEDER association on breast cancer, which organized the event, also distributed pink wristlets reading “early detection saves lives.”

“For the last 20 years, October has been accepted as the breast cancer awareness month. The problem in Turkey is breast cancer is detected very late, triggering high death rates. This is why we want to increase awareness on early detection,” MEMEDER chairman Vahit Özmen said.

The event, sponsored by General Electric, will last three days. The sponsoring firm will donate one Turkish Lira to MEMEDER for every message on social media containing the hashtag #GalataPembeOluyor (Galata turns pink).
